Three problems account for almost every weak personal statement
The first is generality. Wanting to help people is not a reason a committee can distinguish from the four hundred other applicants who also want to help people. The specific shift, the specific patient, the specific moment you realized something, is information; the motivation statement it produces is not.
The second is structure. Most drafts spend two thirds of their length on childhood and background and arrive at the actual point in the final paragraph. Reversing that is frequently the largest single improvement available, and it requires no new material at all.
