Your state decides which tests and which scores
The Praxis is a family of assessments rather than a single exam. Praxis Core covers reading, writing and mathematics; the Subject Assessments cover the content area you will teach; the Principles of Learning and Teaching tests cover pedagogy by grade band. Which of these you need, and what score counts as a pass, is decided by the state you are certifying in.
That matters more than it sounds. Candidates moving states, or applying in one state while completing a program in another, regularly prepare for the wrong test code or aim at the wrong cut score. Confirm the requirement with your state's certification authority before you build a plan around it.
After that the work is diagnostic. A Praxis score report breaks performance into categories and shows how you did in each relative to the range of other candidates, which is usually enough to tell a content gap from a writing or timing problem.

Be careful with Praxis pass-rate statistics you find online
A widely circulated set of figures about Praxis disparities comes from a general teacher-testing report published in 2011 and is often reproduced as though it were current. The most recent peer-reviewed data we could verify covers one test only, and says something different.
Affrunti, N. W., & Sowin, S. (2024). Examining Racial-Ethnic and Gender Differences on the Praxis School Psychologist Test, September 2023 to August 2024. NASP Research Reports, 8(4), using data supplied to NASP by ETS. Pass rates differed significantly between racial-ethnic groups in this dataset, while every group passed at 81% or higher. This covers Praxis 5403 only. For any broader claim, go to ETS directly rather than to a prep company's summary.

Whichever your certifying state requires for the license you are applying for. Requirements and passing scores are set state by state, so confirm them with the certification authority rather than assuming they carry over from another state or from your program's advice.
It depends on the state and the test. The same Praxis test can have different cut scores in different states, which is why the requirement is the first thing we check rather than something we work out later.
Constructed response is rubric-graded, which makes it the most improvable part of the exam. Most candidates who are failing it are writing competently and not addressing every rubric criterion, and that is a technique problem rather than a writing-ability problem.
The figures most often quoted for this trace back to a general teacher-testing report from 2011, and they are frequently reproduced as if they were current. The most recent verifiable peer-reviewed data we found covers the School Psychologist test only, where differences between racial-ethnic groups were statistically significant but every group passed at 81% or higher. We would rather give you that, accurately scoped, than repeat a fifteen-year-old figure attached to the wrong test.
