The exam asks what a project manager should do, not what you would do
The PMP is built on three domains, People, Process and Business Environment, and it deliberately mixes predictive, agile and hybrid approaches. The questions are overwhelmingly situational, and the correct answer is the one consistent with PMI's stated view of good practice rather than the one your organization would sanction on a Tuesday.
That is why experience can work against you. A candidate who has run projects for ten years has a strong, well-earned instinct for what to do next, and on this exam that instinct is a competing hypothesis rather than an advantage. Learning to recognize which framework a question is testing, and answering from inside it, is the single highest-value thing to practice.
The second issue is the exam's length and pace. It is a long sitting, and candidates who have not rehearsed the endurance side of it lose accuracy in the final block, which is where the questions are no easier.

Frequently Asked Questions
PMI does not publish an official pass rate, and the figures circulating on prep sites range from around 40% to around 65% with no primary source behind any of them. We would rather tell you that than repeat a number we cannot stand behind.
Usually more than you expect, though not for the reason you would guess. The content is familiar; the problem is that the exam wants PMI's answer and your instinct supplies your organization's. That gap is what the preparation is actually for.
The CAPM is aimed at people without the project leadership hours the PMP requires. If you meet the PMP's eligibility criteria, the PMP is the credential employers ask for. If you do not yet, the CAPM is a real qualification rather than a consolation prize.
PMI sets the fee and it differs for members and non-members, and it has changed recently, so check pmi.org directly rather than a prep site. Membership sometimes pays for itself against the fee difference alone.
