An experienced manager asked why a team underperforms gives a confident answer based on pattern recognition across years. A doctoral researcher has to say how they would know, what evidence would distinguish their explanation from two others, and what the literature already establishes. That is a different move, and it feels slower and less useful at first.
Research methods coursework is where this bites. It is often the least comfortable part of a DBA for people with strong practical backgrounds, because it is the part furthest from how they normally work and closest to what the dissertation will require.
The literature review is the other transition point. Practitioners tend to read for what is useful. Doctoral reading has to map a field, including work you disagree with and work that turned out to be wrong, because the map is what positions your own contribution.
