Three questions sit underneath almost every question they ask
Is this your work? Do you understand what you did and why? And can you situate it, meaning do you know what it contributes and what it does not? Nearly every specific question is one of those three wearing a topic.
That reframes preparation completely. Memorizing your chapters is close to useless, because they are not going to ask you what page 84 says. They are going to ask why you chose that sample, what you would do differently, and what you would say to someone who disagrees with your interpretation.
The best preparation is being asked those questions out loud by someone who has read your work and is willing to push. Most candidates have never once said their argument aloud to a person who disagreed with it, and discovering how that feels during the actual defense is avoidable.

Four question types, and what each is really testing
Why this method?
Testing whether the design was reasoned or inherited. They want the alternatives you considered and the reason you rejected them, not a restatement of what you did.
What would you do differently?
Testing self-awareness. The wrong answer is nothing. Every study has limitations, and a candidate who cannot name their own has not thought about the work critically.
How does this relate to X?
Testing whether you know your field, often with a paper or theory you did not cite. Not knowing one specific paper is survivable. Being unable to engage with the idea is not.
What is your contribution?
Testing whether you can say what is new here, plainly and without hedging. Surprisingly many candidates cannot, after four years of work.
The four weeks before
Reread as an examiner would
Looking for the places where you asserted rather than argued, where a limitation is glossed, where a claim outruns the data. Mark them. These are where the questions come from and you can find most of them yourself.
Write the two-sentence version
What you did and what it contributes, in two sentences, out loud, without notes. If it takes a paragraph, the argument is not yet clear enough to defend under pressure.
Mock defense with a real challenge
Someone who has read it and will push back. This is the part that cannot be simulated alone, and the first time you defend your method aloud should not be in front of the committee.
Rehearse the hard answers, then stop
Work on the two or three questions you most dread, then stop preparing. Candidates who cram to the last hour arrive depleted, and the defense rewards composure more than recall.

Frequently Asked Questions
Nobody can tell you specifically, and be wary of anyone who claims to. What is predictable is the shape: why this method, what are the limitations, what would you change, how does this fit the literature, and what is the contribution. Preparing across those five covers most of what actually gets asked.
Say so, then show how you would think about it. That is a much better outcome than improvising something wrong, which invites follow-up questions you also cannot answer. Examiners are generally fine with I have not considered that, and here is how I would approach it.
It varies enormously by country and institution, from around an hour to several. Your program will tell you the format, whether there is a presentation, who attends and whether it is public. Ask, because walking in with the wrong expectation about the format is an unnecessary source of stress.
Concede what is genuinely a limitation and defend what you actually believe. Candidates get into difficulty by defending indefensible choices out of nerves. Acknowledging a limitation and explaining why you accepted that trade-off is a strong answer, not a weak one.
Yes. The format is usually shorter and the expectations lower, but the question types are the same and so is the value of having said your answers out loud once before.
About a week or two out. Far enough that you can act on what it surfaces, close enough that it still feels real. A mock three months early tends to get treated as a rehearsal rather than a test.
