Chapter two

A literature review that summarizes is a reading list with paragraphs

The commonest comment on a draft review is that it is descriptive. Study A found this, study B found that, study C found something else. What is missing is the part where you tell the reader what all of it adds up to, and why it leaves room for your study.

Synthesis, not summary

Organize by idea, not by author

The single structural change that fixes most weak reviews is organizing around themes or debates rather than around studies. A section that opens Smith (2019) argued is organized by author. A section that opens Two competing explanations have been offered for this effect is organized by idea, and it forces you to compare rather than list.

Comparison is where the critical work happens. Where do these studies agree, where do they conflict, and why might they conflict? Different populations, different measures, different time periods. A review that explains the disagreements in a field is doing something a reader cannot do for themselves.

The gap then follows naturally. It is not a sentence you add at the end announcing that little research exists. It is what becomes visible once the field has been mapped properly, and a well-built review makes it obvious before you state it.

  • Organized by theme or debate rather than by source
  • Studies compared and evaluated, not just reported
  • A gap that emerges from the synthesis rather than being asserted
  • A search strategy you can describe if asked

What a review covers

Read against your research questions, not in isolation

  • Whether the structure is thematic or merely chronological
  • Where description could become comparison, graded line by line
  • Whether the gap is argued or announced
  • Coverage: what a reader in your field would expect to see and does not
  • Whether the review actually sets up the study that follows it
Common problems

Four things supervisors write in the margin

Annotated bibliography in prose

One paragraph per study, in no particular order, each summarizing without connecting. The most common single weakness and the most straightforward to restructure.

No evaluation

Reporting what a study found without any assessment of how well it found it. Sample, design, measures and context all bear on how much weight a finding can carry.

A gap that is not a gap

No research has examined this in Ohio is a location, not a gap. A real gap is an unanswered question, a contradiction nobody has resolved, or a population where the mechanism might work differently.

Disconnected from the study

A review that ends and a methodology that begins, with no bridge. The last section should make your research questions feel inevitable.

How the work runs

From a pile of sources to an argument

01

Send the draft and your research questions

We read the review against the questions it is supposed to justify. A review that is fine in isolation can still fail because it sets up a different study from the one you are doing.

02

Structure first

Before any line editing, whether the organization is doing the work. Restructuring a review after it has been polished sentence by sentence wastes the polishing, so this comes first.

03

Description graded for conversion

Every passage that reports without comparing is flagged, usually with the comparison already implicit in what you wrote.

04

The gap, tested

We tell you whether your stated gap follows from your own synthesis. Where it does not, that is normally a signal that the synthesis needs extending rather than the gap needs rewording.

05

You rewrite, we reread

Comments explain what each change is for, so the revision is yours and transfers to the next chapter.

The line we never cross

Your reading, your argument, your review

  • We do not write your literature review or sections of it.
  • We do not run your searches or select your sources.
  • We do not supply summaries of papers for you to include.
  • We do not provide text to paste into your document.
  • We read what you wrote and show you where summary needs to become argument.

A review built from summaries you did not write is one you cannot discuss, and discussing the literature is a substantial part of most vivas. Read the full policy.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no number, and any number quoted without reference to your field and your topic is invented. What matters is coverage: whether someone who knows the area would find anything important missing. A tightly argued review of forty well-chosen sources beats a loose one citing two hundred.

Usually by mapping the field properly first. Gaps show up as contradictions nobody has resolved, populations nobody has studied where there is reason to think the mechanism differs, or methods that have never been applied to a question. If you are searching for a gap before synthesizing, you are looking too early.

Thematic, in almost all cases. Chronological organization is appropriate when the development of thinking over time is itself your point, and it is otherwise a way of avoiding the harder work of grouping ideas.

Not of every study individually, and relentless fault-finding reads as poorly as uncritical acceptance. Critical means evaluative: weighing what a finding can bear given how it was produced. Sometimes the evaluation is that a study is strong and its finding stands.

A systematic review follows a pre-specified, documented protocol for searching, screening and extracting, usually reported against a standard such as PRISMA. It is a research method in its own right. A narrative review for a dissertation chapter has different expectations, and mixing the two labels loosely causes real problems.

Usually the studies that are described but never referred to again. If a paragraph does not connect to another and does not support your gap, it is coverage for its own sake. Cutting by relevance rather than by paragraph length is what keeps the argument intact.
