Critique, not coverage
Master's work rewards accurate coverage of the literature. Doctoral work rewards critique: where this body of research is weak, what it assumes, where studies conflict and what you conclude. Students who were strong at the master's level often get their first mediocre grades here without being told clearly what changed.
The other shift is toward the problem of practice, which runs through the coursework long before the dissertation. Courses ask you to connect theory to a real problem in a real setting continuously, and the assignments build toward a study rather than standing alone.
The practical constraint is the calendar. A school year has periods where nothing else is possible, and doctoral programs are not scheduled around them. Candidates who plan for that finish. Candidates who assume even weeks fall behind in October and never fully recover.

Frequently Asked Questions
An EdD is oriented to improving practice, usually organized around a problem in a real setting, and assessed partly on contribution to practice. A PhD is oriented to contribution to knowledge and expects deeper theoretical engagement. Both are doctorates and neither is a lesser version of the other.
Usually that it describes and applies rather than critiques and positions. Doctoral writing evaluates the evidence it cites, names where the literature disagrees, and commits to a view with reasons. It is often a smaller change than the feedback makes it sound.
From the first term, informally. Every course is an opportunity to read around a problem you are interested in, and candidates who arrive at the proposal stage with a topic they have been circling for two years move much faster than those starting cold.
Find out the format first, because it varies enormously between programs, from timed written papers to portfolios to oral defenses. Then prepare for that format specifically. Generic preparation for a format you have not confirmed is the most common wasted effort here.
Many people do, and it is genuinely hard. What separates those who finish is usually planning around the school year rather than through it, and having a small regular writing pattern that survives the busy weeks rather than a plan that assumes they will not happen.
