The PN exam is not a smaller RN exam. The scope is different

Candidates who prepare with RN materials get the content broadly right and the boundaries wrong. A large share of PN items turn on what falls inside practical nurse scope and what must be escalated, and that distinction is what the exam is testing.

Where the difference shows

Scope of practice is the exam, not a detail within it

An RN item might ask what the nurse should do. A PN item asks the same thing in a context where the correct answer is sometimes to notify the registered nurse. Candidates preparing on RN materials routinely pick the clinically sensible intervention that is outside PN scope, and get it wrong for a reason that has nothing to do with knowledge.

Assignment and delegation works the same way. PN candidates need to know what can be delegated to unlicensed assistive personnel and what cannot, and what a practical nurse can accept from an RN. These appear often and they are learnable rules rather than clinical judgment.

The rest of the preparation is the same shape as any other exam here: read your own performance report, work out whether the gap is content, item format, pacing or reading load, and weight the plan accordingly.

  • Scope of practice boundaries treated as core content
  • Delegation and assignment rules practiced explicitly
  • Next Generation item formats, which apply to PN as well
  • A plan built from your own score report

What the plan covers

Weighted by what your report actually shows

  • The PN test plan and how its categories are weighted
  • Scope boundaries: what to do, what to report, what to refuse
  • Delegation to unlicensed assistive personnel
  • Next Generation item types, practiced separately from content
  • Pacing and reading load under adaptive testing
The line we never cross

Preparation is teaching and practice, never the exam itself

  • No help of any kind during the exam.
  • No live questions, no recalled items, no reconstructed banks.
  • No sitting the exam on anyone's behalf, ever.
  • We do not guarantee a pass, and you should be careful of anyone who does.
  • We do guarantee the process: a named person, a set number of hours, a plan from your own report, and further sessions at no cost if you do not pass.

NCLEX content is secure for the PN exam exactly as it is for the RN. Using recalled items is a testing-security violation that voids the result and puts the license at permanent risk. Read the full policy.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The structure is the same: adaptive, built on a test plan of client needs categories, using the same Next Generation item types. The content differs in scope. PN items frequently turn on what a practical nurse may do independently and what must be escalated, which is the single most common reason RN-focused preparation does not transfer cleanly.

Partly, for underlying content. The risk is scope: RN materials teach the RN answer, and on a PN item that answer is sometimes outside your scope and therefore wrong. Use PN-specific practice for anything involving delegation, assignment or escalation.

NCSBN's minimum interval between attempts applies to the PN exam in the same way as the RN. Your board of nursing may add its own conditions, so check with them as well as the national rule.

Yes. Case studies, bow-tie, matrix and the other formats are used across both exams, and the partial-credit scoring works the same way. They need practicing as a separate skill from content in either case.

Not for this exam. Prepare for the PN scope you are being tested on now. Answering PN items with RN reasoning is exactly the error that costs candidates points, and a bridge program will teach the wider scope when you get there.

Exam plans start at $199. You get an exact figure after the first conversation, based on how many sessions the plan needs.
