Why do absorption and variable costing give different profits?
Because absorption costing puts fixed manufacturing overhead into inventory, so some of it sits on the balance sheet until the product sells. Variable costing expenses it in the period. When production and sales differ, the profit figures diverge, and reconciling them is a standard exam question.
This comes up on Managerial Accounting Support, where it is answered in the context of the work itself.
