If nobody could disagree with it, it is not a thesis
The single most useful test for a thesis statement is whether an informed person could take the opposite position. Statements that pass that test give an essay something to do. Statements that fail it produce essays that describe.
The contestability test
Read your thesis and ask whether an informed, reasonable person could argue the opposite. If not, you have written an observation.
Not contestable
Social media has changed how young people communicate.
Contestable
Platform design, rather than the volume of use, accounts for most of the difference in how adolescents experience online social pressure.
Nobody disputes the first. The second names a mechanism and rules out a competing explanation, which means it can be wrong, which means it can be argued and therefore defended.
The three moves that turn a topic into a thesis
Narrow the scope. From a field to a specific claim about a specific thing.
Name a mechanism or a cause. Not that something happened, but why, or through what.
Rule something out. The phrase “rather than” is doing a lot of work in the example above, because it commits you against an alternative explanation.
Working through it
Topic: nurse retention
Narrowed: nurse retention in rural hospitals
With a mechanism: scheduling autonomy affects retention in rural hospitals
Ruling something out: scheduling autonomy predicts retention in rural hospitals more strongly than pay differentials do
What a thesis is not
It is not an announcement of structure. “This essay will examine three factors affecting retention” tells the reader what the document does, not what you think. Some disciplines accept a short roadmap sentence after the thesis, but it is not a substitute for one.
It is not a question. A research question belongs at the proposal stage or in specific assignment formats. An essay thesis answers.
It is not a statement of fact. Facts are the evidence for a thesis, not the thesis itself.
Testing it against the essay you actually wrote
The most common problem we see is not a weak thesis but a thesis that no longer matches the essay. This happens because the argument developed during writing, which is normal, and the introduction never got updated, which is avoidable.
Two checks at the end of a draft.
Read the thesis, then read your conclusion. Do they say the same thing? If the conclusion has moved somewhere more interesting, that is usually where the real thesis is, and the introduction should be rewritten to promise it.
Read the thesis, then each topic sentence in order. Every paragraph should visibly advance the claim. A paragraph that does not is either background that should be shortened or a different argument that should be cut.
A pattern that works when you are stuck
When you cannot get a thesis out, write the sentence “I think X, because Y, even though Z.”
X is your claim. Y is the main reason. Z is the strongest objection.
Stuck version
I think scheduling autonomy matters more than pay, because the exit interview data points that way, even though pay is what most retention programs target.
Cleaned up
Although retention initiatives typically target compensation, exit data suggests scheduling autonomy is the stronger predictor of whether rural nurses stay.
The even though clause is the useful part, because it usually reveals what your essay actually has to do the work of answering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Usually at the end of the introduction, after you have established the question and why it matters. In longer work it may be developed across a paragraph rather than stated in one sentence. What matters is that the reader knows your position before the body of the work begins.
Yes, particularly in longer work where the claim has conditions attached. Two sentences is common and entirely acceptable. What does not work is a claim so hedged across four sentences that the reader cannot tell what is being asserted.
A research question asks something. A thesis answers it. Some disciplines and some assignment types want a question, particularly at proposal stage; most essays want an answer. Check what your assignment asks for, because submitting one where the other is expected is common.
Generally not in the form this essay will examine, which announces structure rather than stating a position. Some disciplines accept a brief roadmap after the thesis. The thesis itself should be the claim, not a description of the document.
Yes and you often should. Writing is how the argument gets tested, and finding that your original claim does not survive your own evidence is a sign of thinking rather than failure. Update the thesis and the introduction to match what you actually argued.
Specific enough that the essay can support it in the word count available. A claim about a whole field cannot be defended in 2,000 words. Narrowing usually improves the essay, because a defended narrow claim beats an undefended broad one.
