Systems thinking, not more clinical depth
A DNP is not a longer MSN. The orientation moves from the individual patient to the system: quality improvement, health policy, informatics, organizational leadership and translating evidence into practice at scale. Clinicians who are excellent with patients sometimes find this genuinely unfamiliar territory.
The writing changes with it. Doctoral work is expected to engage critically with literature, take defensible positions and connect practice to policy and to evidence. Coursework that describes excellent clinical practice without that systems layer reads as under-pitched, and the feedback often says so without explaining why.
Then there are the practice hours, which are a substantial requirement with their own documentation, competency mapping and supervision requirements. Students frequently underestimate the administrative load of evidencing them properly.

Frequently Asked Questions
A PhD generates new knowledge through original research. A DNP translates existing evidence into practice and is assessed on practice change at a systems level. Both are doctorates. They prepare for different roles, and neither is a lesser version of the other.
It is set by accreditation standards and your program applies them, including how many hours from a prior master's may count. Your program is the authority on your specific requirement, and it is worth confirming the total and what counts in your first term rather than your last.
Usually that it describes and applies rather than critiques and positions. Doctoral writing evaluates the evidence it cites, acknowledges where the literature disagrees, and commits to a view with reasons. Adding that layer is often a smaller change than the feedback makes it sound.
Earlier than the program schedule implies. Site buy-in, any required approval and baseline data all take time you cannot compress, and students who start the project in the term the syllabus names it routinely run short.
Most DNP students do, and the programs assume it. The constraint is usually the project and the practice hours rather than the coursework, because those need blocks of time in a specific setting rather than evenings.
