Writing in a second language

Your argument is not the problem. The article system is

Work written in a second language often loses points on a narrow set of patterns: articles, collocation, prepositions, register. None of them obscure meaning, which is why they survive every proofread, and all of them are visible to a grader.

What this is for

Accuracy and register, not rewriting

The risk with language editing is that it becomes rewriting, and the work comes back sounding like someone else wrote it. That is bad editing and at some institutions it is an integrity problem. What should change is accuracy and idiom. What should not change is your argument, your structure or your voice.

So each change comes back tracked with the reason written beside it. That is partly so you can check nothing has been altered beyond language, and partly so the edit teaches you something. Most writers have five or six recurring patterns, and seeing them named is what makes the next document need less work.

We also flag the overcorrection that is common in second-language academic writing: reaching for longer Latinate words in the belief that they are more academic, when English academic prose is usually more direct than writers expect.

  • Articles, prepositions, agreement and tense corrected
  • Collocation fixed, so phrasing reads as it is conventionally written
  • Register adjusted where it is too formal as well as too informal
  • Your argument, structure and voice left alone

What you get back

Usually within two to five days

  • Tracked changes you accept or reject individually
  • The reason written beside each change, grouped by type
  • A summary of the patterns that recurred most in your document
  • Comments where something is unclear rather than incorrect
  • One round of follow-up questions at no extra cost
The line we never cross

We correct language. We do not rewrite work

  • We do not write content, sections or paragraphs.
  • We do not change your argument, findings or conclusions.
  • We do not add citations or sources.
  • We do not translate work written in another language.
  • Every change is tracked, explained and yours to reject.

Some institutions set limits on language editing for assessed work, particularly where language is itself being assessed. Check your policy and send it to us, and we will work inside it. Read the full policy.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Language editing corrects accuracy and idiom while leaving your argument, structure and phrasing choices intact. Every change is tracked with a reason, so you can see that nothing beyond language has been altered, and reject anything you disagree with.

No. We edit work already written in English. If your document is in another language, translation is a different service and you would need a translator first.

It depends on your institution and the assignment. Where language accuracy is part of what is being graded, some institutions restrict or prohibit language editing. Check your policy before commissioning anyone, and tell us what it says.

From $0.04 per word. The figure depends on how much correction the draft needs and the turnaround, and you get an exact quote after we have seen a sample.

Yes, beside each one. That is the part that makes the next document need less work. Most writers have a small number of recurring patterns, and seeing them named is more useful than having them silently fixed.

Yes. Journal submissions are a common reason people use this, and language is a frequent cause of desk rejection that has nothing to do with the quality of the research. Tell us the target journal and any author guidelines.

We will edit a section and return it with the reasons written in, so you can see what changes and confirm your voice survives it.
