The design is assessed through the document, so the document has to carry the reasoning
A working prototype with a weak report scores badly, because the grader cannot see the engineering. Requirements, concept selection and justified decisions are what is actually being assessed, and they have to be written down as you go.

A requirement you cannot verify cannot be designed against
The device should be lightweight is not a requirement. Under 2.5 kilograms including the battery is. Design reports full of the first kind have nothing to evaluate the final design against, which is why the evaluation section then reads as assertion.
Concept selection is the second place points concentrate. Generating several concepts and choosing between them against weighted criteria, with the weighting justified, is the standard expectation. A single concept presented as the design skips the part that demonstrates engineering judgment.
Then rationale. Every significant decision traded something: cost against durability, weight against stiffness, simplicity against performance. Naming what you gave up is what distinguishes an engineering report from a description of an object.
- Requirements written so they can be verified
- Several concepts generated and compared against criteria
- Every significant decision justified with its trade-off
- The final design evaluated against the original requirements
What we work on
Your own project and your own rubric
- Requirements specification and verification criteria
- Concept generation and selection matrices
- Writing design rationale that names trade-offs
- Technical report structure for a design project
- Evaluating the final design against the requirements
We advise on the documentation. You do the engineering
- We do not produce designs, drawings, models or calculations.
- We do not write your report or any section of it.
- We do not run simulations or generate results for you.
- We do not participate in your team project.
- We review what you have produced and tell you what will not hold.
Nothing here is engineering advice for a real build. If your project will be manufactured or tested physically, safety and design responsibility sit with you and your supervising faculty. Read the full policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
It is verifiable, has a number, and states what rather than how. Under 2.5 kilograms, operating between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius, assembled in under ten minutes. If you cannot describe the test that would confirm it, it is not yet a requirement.
Enough that the selection is meaningful, usually three to five genuinely different approaches. Two plausible options plus a straw man is transparent. The comparison is what demonstrates judgment, so the alternatives have to be real.
Each significant decision, the alternatives considered, the criteria applied and what the choice cost. Reports that list features without the reasoning behind them are describing rather than justifying, and that is the most common weakness.
Not usually. A well-documented design with a clear analysis of why it did not perform as predicted, and what you would change, often scores well. Presenting a non-working prototype as successful is the outcome that costs points.
Against the requirements you set at the start, one by one, with evidence. Met, partially met or not met, with the measurement. This is why verifiable requirements matter so much: without them there is nothing to evaluate against.
Send the report and the brief
We will tell you whether the requirements are verifiable, whether the concept selection is genuine, and whether the rationale names its trade-offs.
