The discussion section is where the report is actually graded
Results tables are necessary and rarely differentiate. What separates reports is whether you explain the discrepancy between what you measured and what theory predicted, with a quantified account of where the error came from.

Every measurement has uncertainty, and pretending otherwise is the error
A report giving an efficiency of 62.4738% has claimed a precision the instruments cannot support. Propagating uncertainty through the calculation and reporting the result to a justified number of significant figures is basic engineering practice and it is directly assessed.
The discrepancy from theory then needs an account. Heat loss to the surroundings, friction, an assumption in the ideal model that does not hold. Naming the likely sources and estimating their magnitude is what turns a discrepancy into analysis. Writing that the difference was due to experimental error says nothing.
The third thing is connecting back to theory. A thermodynamics lab exists to demonstrate a principle, and the report should say whether it did and what the deviation tells you about the assumptions behind it.
- Uncertainty propagated, not estimated at the end
- Significant figures justified by the instruments
- Discrepancies attributed to named, quantified sources
- Results connected back to the theory being tested
What we work on
Your own report and your own data
- Lab report structure and what each section is for
- Uncertainty propagation and error analysis
- First and second law applications in the write-up
- Presenting data in tables and graphs properly
- Writing a discussion that analyzes rather than describes
Your experiment, your report
- We do not write your lab reports.
- We do not fabricate, alter or supply experimental data.
- We do not complete calculations you will submit.
- We do not sit or assist during any exam.
- We teach the analysis and review what you wrote.
Adjusting measured data toward the theoretical value is fabrication, and it is treated more seriously than a weak report. A report explaining a large discrepancy well can score higher than one reporting suspiciously perfect agreement. Read the full policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Start from the uncertainty of each instrument, then propagate through your calculation using the appropriate rule for sums, products and powers. The result tells you how many significant figures your final answer can justify, which is usually far fewer than your calculator displays.
Identify the likely sources, estimate their magnitude, and say whether they account for the gap. If they do not, say that too and suggest what else might. Attributing the difference to experimental error without specifics is the version that loses points.
As many as your least precise measurement justifies, after propagation. Reporting six figures from instruments accurate to two is one of the most visible errors in a lab report and it is easy to avoid.
Whether the result supports the theory, what the discrepancy is and what caused it, what the uncertainty means for your conclusion, and what you would change. It is the analytical section and it is usually the shortest in a weak report.
We can work through the method with you and show you where an approach goes wrong. We will not produce the calculations you submit, because the method is what is being assessed.
Send the report and the lab brief
We will tell you whether the uncertainty analysis holds and whether the discussion explains the discrepancy or just notes it.
