What is the difference between a colon and a semicolon?
A colon introduces something: a list, an explanation, or a conclusion that follows from what came before. A semicolon joins two complete sentences that are closely related. The quick test is whether the part after the mark explains the part before it, which points to a colon, or simply continues it, which points to a semicolon.
