Original contribution does not mean revolutionary. It means something is known at the end that was not known at the beginning, and that you can state what it is in a sentence. Candidates routinely undersell work that clears this bar easily, and occasionally oversell work that does not clear it at all.
The other distinguishing feature is theoretical engagement. A PhD is expected to situate itself in a body of theory and to say something back to it. An applied doctorate can solve a problem and stop there. A PhD that solves a problem without engaging the theory usually comes back with major corrections.
Both of those are easier to get right early than to retrofit. A study designed without a theoretical frame can rarely have one bolted on at the writing stage, which is why proposal-stage conversations are worth more than any amount of help in year four.

A new finding, a method applied where it has not been, a theory tested in a population that might behave differently, or a synthesis that resolves a contradiction. It does not have to be large. It has to be defensible and clearly stated.
Usually, and it is far more common than anyone admits publicly. The recovery is almost never about motivation. It is about re-establishing a small, regular, externally accountable writing pattern, starting from something much smaller than the chapter you are avoiding.
Surface it rather than trying to satisfy both in the text, which usually satisfies neither. Often the disagreement is narrower than it appears and turns on a single design decision. Working out what each is actually asking for is a useful session in itself.
Broadly, a PhD is assessed on contribution to knowledge and expects theoretical engagement. Applied doctorates are assessed on contribution to practice and are usually organized around a real problem in a real setting. Both are doctorates and the standards are comparable, but the thing being demonstrated differs.
