How is an EdD different from a PhD in education?

An EdD is oriented to improving practice, usually organized around a problem in a real setting, and assessed partly on contribution to practice. A PhD is oriented to contribution to knowledge and expects deeper theoretical engagement. Both are doctorates and neither is a lesser version of the other.
